Give A Cow

Story

Hi friends,

I recently learnt that hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees around Australia have been given 3 weeks until they are evicted from community detention and expected to financially support themselves¹. These are people who have experienced immense trauma, are new to living in Australia, and whose job history is compromised by their time spent in detention. Due to the current government’s staunchly xenophobic, and anti-refugee stance, there are no financial or social protections for this vulnerable group once they enter the community. Essentially, if they don’t find a job, they will be homeless.

Therefore, right now services supporting people seeking asylum and refugees are absolutely vital! That is why I am going to run everyday of November (Moo-vember?) dressed as a cow to raise funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. (I was running a little low on fundraising ideas okay?) The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre are an absolutely fabulous service that support people seeking asylum and refuge in various aspects of their lives including material well-being, mental health, with legal services, and accomodation.

I’m aiming to raise at least $1000 this month – but the more the better! Just $27 can provide someone groceries for a week, and with $104 the ASRC can house a family for a week. But any donation large or small will be going where it is vitally needed.

So friends, please give a COW about the vulnerable in our community and help by giving them a hand up during a time that is challenging for all of us.

Thank you for reading.

Warmly,

 Jade

ASRC Footscray (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre)

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is both a place and a movement.

As an independent not for profit organisation, we are owned and run by our community. Our programs empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well-being. As a movement, we mobilise and unite communities to create lasting social and policy change for people seeking asylum in Australia.

We assist over 7,000 people seeking asylum each year from our centres in Footscray and Dandenong, Victoria.
